In May 1994 Markus obtained a Master's degree in Computer Science (Dipl.-Inform.) and in 2001 a PhD in Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) both from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany.
University of Karlsruhe
From 1995 to 2000 Markus worked as a research assistant at the Telecooperation Office (TecO) of the University of Karlsruhe. His key areas was the design of IT architectures for ubiquitous systems. For that he presented his scientific papers/results at international conferences. As part of the university work he coordinated student/research work within industrial projects (e.g. with Digital Equipment, SAP AG, Daimler Benz AG) and lead student practical courses and seminars (incl. planning and preparation of lectures and exams). Being a 3rd party funded institute he also was responsible for writing proposal to acquire research projects/funding (e.g. from European Community). His final topic supporting his PhD was the design and management of the integration of mobile appliances into a multimedia information system.
SAP AG / SAP SE
In November 2000 Markus joined SAP as a senior researcher in the area of ubiquitous computing. After a successful acquisition of a large project funded by the European Commission, in late 2000 Markus took over the project management of this European project. In 2002 SAP Research established the instrument of Research Programs and Markus was nominated as the Program Manager for Device Independent Application Engineering. 2004 Markus joined the Executive Team of SAP Research. As a Director of Research Business Development, he was in charge of the corporate engagement activities of SAP Research. During that time he closely worked together with SAP steering committees and research groups in order to align SAP Research's research activities to maximize the value for SAP.
Mobile / EPM Product Management
Moving from research into development, in 2006 Markus took over the role of a Program Product Owner for a Mobile Platform, later for Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications. He executed QCD responsibility for full development lifecycle from planning, development to productization. For that he changed the global SBC product management structure and processes from project oriented development into agile SCRUM-based development and set-up a global product management team in Bangalore, Dublin, Paris, Palo Alto, and Walldorf.
SAP Active Global Support
In 2011 Markus joined SAP Active Global Support, the pro-active support organization of SAP. As the head of Global Center-of-Expertise User Experience (Ux) & Mobile he defined the premium engagement support portfolio for Ux and mobile and provided dedicated support for strategic key customers. With that he allowed customers to improve the user experience of their existing solutions and efficiently adopt enterprise mobility.
Since May 2015, Markus is part of the central architecture team of Hybris Marketing (former SAP Customer Engagement Initiative). As Chief Development Architect, Markus focuses on technical UI architecture, user experience, UI/UX strategy as well as on mobile and social topics.
From 2002-2008 Markus also hold a special teaching position of the University of Darmstadt, Faculty of Computer Science (Prof. Dr. Max Mühlhäuser). In his university main course "TK2 Web Engineering, Web Cooperation and eLearning" he taught software engineering of web-based applications.
For quite a while Markus is very active in various engagements supporting sports and young people in computer related topics.
